Science: Our Solar System display wall

We have been studying the Solar System for a few weeks now and are fascinated by it all. We are studying each planet and have found a simple sentence to remember the order of the planets from the Sun.

"My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas".

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. (Pluto is now known as a dwarf planet though).

Here is our wall:
Before any detail was added

I did use glow in the dark paint on the stars and also on the Asteroid belt, which looks great when it's dark.

Sadly the glow in the dark didn't show on this picture but it does work. My children got really excited when we turned the lights off.

  1. As Salaamu Alaykum, I so love your board! We too have been studying the planets and solar system!I just received the 3d planets from my mother in law for our study and we have the glow in the dark stars which are a huge hit! I did want to make planet crafts out of the styro foam balls and have the kids paint them and use glow in the dark paint...just an idea *wink*

  2. Wa alaykum salaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakatu, Hope that everything is going good with you Sis? It is a good idea but I am finding it hard to find those styro balls so if you can think of any other suggestions it will be appreciated. (ping pong balls maybe..?) but some of the planets are a lot bigger than others. Paper mache..? How to make the ball shape...? It needs more thinking. Please Sister when/if you make any let me know, as you always have good ideas mashaa'Allaah. ((Hugs))

  3. This is an interesting site to show your children, when explaining to them how when one side of the Earth is facing away from the Sun, it is nightfall and when facing the Sun it is daylight.

  4. Assalamo alaikum warahamatullahi wabarakatuhu Sisters,
Mashalalh that sure is an amazing project. We are studying this topic too. Will share our projects soon Inshallah.

As for the styro foam balls ... I am not sure where you live sister but I am in Canada and we have packs of different sized styro foam balls in our local $ store in the crafts section. You may find them in other stores too in the crafts section.
    Just Sharing,
    Umm Umamah

  5. Wa alaykum salaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakatuh Sister and welcome.
I'm in England and even though we have some pound shops here they are not nearly as good as the 99c stores in US (I used to live in Texas). I will keep looking for them though or maybe I might find something similar insha'Allaah. Looking forward to seeing your crafts insha'Allaah. ((Hugs))

  6. As Salaamu Alaykum Wa Rahmahtuallahi Wa Barakatuh,

Okay well as for the styro balls you can shave them down to size if you can't find size your looking for. Paper mache' is a wonderful idea and what I would use is balloons! Simple as that! blow them up to different sizes. you usually can find stores carry a variation of sizes in one pack, but blow them up to the sizes you need for each planet! then when you have covered it you can have the kids paint and add some glow in the dark paint! So much fun you can have with is sis!!! Let me know if you plan on doing it! I would so love to see! *smile*

  7. Wa alaykum salaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakatuh Sister Umm Abdul Basir,

I found some christmas baubles in a charity shop and they seem perfect for the job, my daughter suggested that we can put paper mache' on some of them to make them bigger and paint them, so it looks like our project will be on the way soon insha'Allaah. I was think of suspending them inside a large cardboard box painted black but not sure yet how to make the ring around Saturn. I will let you know how it goes insha'Allaah. Take care Dear ((Hugs))xxx

  9. Wa alaykum salaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakatu Dear Sister,
Hope that everything is fine with you insha'Allaah?

We was a bit slow in making our crafts in this project and my daughter bought a solar kit from some money that was given to her and we have put that up in the bedroom, so I will take some pictures and put them here insha'Allaah.

So I don't think we will make these crafts now as we will have solar systems all over the house looool.
